Market Recap: Gold Soars to Six-Month High as Stocks Languish By Elizabeth Harrow An eleventh-hour burst of buying capped off a sleepy session for equities Judging by today's tepid action in the equities market, it seems safe to assume that many traders took off early in anticipation of the long holiday weekend. Meanwhile, the players who did dabble in stocks today seemed cautious ahead of tomorrow's highly anticipated nonfarm payrolls report. A mixed bag of data didn't offer much inspiration to the bulls or the bears; investors weighed mildly disappointing jobless claims data against the retail sector's best monthly same-store sales results since September 2008. Against this backdrop, the major market indexes held close to breakeven throughout the session, spending most of their time in modestly positive territory.
